Law school personal statement (generic JD expectation)
1 required essay, 2 optional for the 2026-27 cycle.
Essays
Personal statement · About two pages, double spaced (LSAC states no limit; most schools cap at two pages, a few allow three or four) · required
Law schools want to recruit people who are qualified for reasons beyond grades and scores. The essay or personal statement is your opportunity to tell the committee what sets you apart from others. An essay on actual experiences and past accomplishments has more value to the committee than speculation about future accomplishments. Any noteworthy personal experience or accomplishment may be an appropriate subject, but be sure to do more than just state it. Describe your experience briefly but concretely, and explain why it had value to you.
Diversity, perspective or adversity statement · Usually one to two pages, double spaced; school-specific · optional
Optional statement offered by many schools (called a diversity, perspective, identity, or background statement) on how your background, experiences, or perspective would contribute to the law school community.
Addendum · Usually one page or less; school-specific · optional
Short factual addendum explaining a specific item in the record: an LSAT score gap, a GPA dip, or a character and fitness disclosure. State the facts, not excuses.
LSAC's page states the content expectation verbatim but sets no length; the two-page double-spaced convention comes from the schools' own instructions (see the individual T14 records). Use this record when the applicant has not named a school.
