The addendum that argues: a sample law school personal statement review

Sample essay, real report. A GPA addendum that spends four paragraphs stating and one paragraph arguing. The read scores it on the addendum's own four bands, which are close to the opposite of the personal statement's, and names the paragraph that undoes the rest. Unedited engine output.

Law school addendum, one semester of academic performance · 365 words

The five-minute read

competent
“A 2.1 semester they explain with a curved Orgo II outlier and a personal situation they won't name, then a 3.81 over five semesters since, and the most useful sentence in the file is the one where they call their own decision to stay in the course stubborn and wrong.”

This is what one reader remembered after a single read.

First move

Cut every sentence in the final paragraph after 'I was named to the dean's list three times' -- the advocacy that follows undercuts the credibility…

The overall analysis

This addendum is doing most of its job and then, in the final paragraph, starts arguing its own case, which is the one move an addendum cannot make. The facts are stated clearly, the responsibility sentence is the strongest line in the piece, and the recovery data is exactly what a reader needs. The problem is the closing paragraph: "I believe this demonstrates," "I hope the committee will consider," and "rather than allowing one difficult semester to define my candidacy" are advocacy, not statement. A law reader notices that register shift immediately, because it is the register of a brief, not a disclosure. Cut the editorializing and let the 3.81 speak. The second issue is smaller but real: the vague personal-situation paragraph is doing no work and carries a faint whiff of withheld excuse. Either name it in one plain sentence or remove it entirely.

How this reader reads: A law school reader reads fast and grades the prose. The numbers already describe the file; the statement either adds judgment and control of the sentence, or it hurts. That one sentence is the only moment a reader would carry forward, because it is the rare addendum that names the writer's actual reasoning rather than circumstances. The rest of the piece is correctly aimed and cleanly executed, which is exactly what competent means here: it does the job and will not be remembered.

This addendum does its job cleanly and without drama. The self-indictment in paragraph four is the strongest moment and the one that separates this from a defensive grade explanation. I would not flag it for a second read because it needs no rescue, but I would note it positively in the file.

Survived the skim

  • · median exam score of 41, curved to a C minus
  • · study group that met three times a week
  • · I was stubborn and I did not want a W on my transcript
  • · 3.81 over five semesters, dean's list three times

Lost in the skim

  • · the detail that they were not a signatory to the formal complaint, which reads as careful distancing but disappears at speed
  • · the vague personal situation paragraph, which registers only as a placeholder and leaves no impression
  • · the closing gratitude sentence, which is boilerplate and invisible
