No essays at all: Common App takes no personal statement either. Exception: the Honors College.

Florida International University reads no essays at all: Common App takes no personal statement here, and there are no supplemental questions. Admission rides on your transcript, course rigor, and the activities you list. Your writing effort belongs to the other schools on your list.

FIU itself does not answer this question anywhere. Its first-year applicant page walks through six numbered steps (take the SAT, ACT or CLT; apply for financial aid; pay the $30 fee; submit transcripts; submit AP, CLEP or IB scores; submit residency documentation) and never names an essay, and no other FIU admissions page addresses first-year essays either way. The one place a positive answer exists is FIU's own profile on the Common App, which carries the line "No personal essay required - First Year". That profile, not FIU's website, is the source for the answer above.

One route is the exception, and it is real writing. First-year students are normally invited into the FIU Honors College along with their admission decision, and an invitation asks for nothing. A student who is not invited may apply through the MyFIU portal after being admitted to FIU, with a weighted GPA of at least 3.7 and an SAT of 1230, an ACT of 26 or a CLT of 86, and that application does ask for a personal statement of 300 to 500 words "explaining why you want to join the Honors College and providing specific examples of how FIU Honors can help you achieve your academic and career goals", plus a one-page resume. For Fall 2027 the Honors deadlines are January 8 for early consideration, February 19 standard and April 12 final. None of it is part of the ordinary FIU application, so if you are not applying to Honors there is still nothing to write.

Early Action (November 2, 2026) is non-binding: an earlier answer with no commitment attached. Regular Decision closes December 16, 2026.

What SAT score do you need for Florida International University?

A 1260 puts you in the top quarter of the students who enrolled, a 1160 at their midpoint, and a 1070 at the bottom quarter, meaning one in four enrolled students scored below it. The same three points on the ACT are 21, 24 and 27. A quarter of an enrolled class scoring under the 25th percentile is not a rounding error, so a score below the range is a reason to strengthen the rest of the application rather than a reason not to apply.

US Department of Education, College Scorecard (2026-09-17). Percentiles describe students who enrolled, not everyone admitted. SAT totals are the reading and math bands added together, which is how every source in this market reports them and is an approximation of about 10 to 20 points, because the two sections are correlated.

What SAT score do you need for Florida International University?
Florida International University sets no minimum. Among students who enrolled, the middle 50% scored 1070-1260 on the SAT: a 1070 sits at the 25th percentile, 1160 at the median and 1260 at the 75th. A score at or above 1260 is a clear strength in the application; below 1070 it is the part of the file the rest has to make up for. These are the figures Florida International University reports to the US Department of Education, released in the College Scorecard of 2026-09-17.
What ACT score do you need for Florida International University?

What GPA do you need for Florida International University?
The honest answer is that the federal data behind this page does not contain one. Colleges report their admit rate and their enrolled students' test scores to the Department of Education; they do not report a GPA distribution, so any site quoting an exact average GPA for Florida International University is either reading that college's own Common Data Set or estimating. What the reported data does say is that Florida International University admits 54.7% of applicants, and the more selective a college is, the closer to the top of the class its admitted students sit and the more the strength of your course load counts alongside the number itself.
How hard is it to get into Florida International University?
Florida International University admits 54.7% of the people who apply, which is about 1 in 2 applicants. Numbers inside the reported range put you in a real position here, and the application itself decides the rest.
