What the essay is
The statement of purpose is read by faculty deciding whether to take you into their lab or seminar. It is about research: the question you want to work on, what you have done so far and what your part was, and who at this program you want to work with. Most programs give it 500 to 1,500 words and set no prompt beyond that.
Where a program asks for a separate personal statement alongside the statement of purpose, it is read as its own essay.
The six things the read judges
- Research Question and Direction
- What the writer wants to work on, stated early and specifically enough that a professor in the field could say whether it is their area.
- Research Experience, Concrete
- What they did, what they found, what their role was, what went wrong, and what they would do differently. A list of labs with no content lowers it.
- Fit: Faculty and Program
- Named faculty and groups, used correctly, with a reason each is a fit for the question. Swap the program and the statement should break.
- Intellectual Trajectory
- How the writer got here as a researcher: which question led to which. Childhood origin stories and "loved science since I was small" lower it.
- Structure and Economy
- Carries a faculty reader to the research question fast and stays there; no burned opening, no biography that is not about the work.
- Clarity for a Faculty Reader
- A professor deciding whether to take this person into the lab can tell in one read what they know, what they can do, and what they want to find out.
What comes back
- The one sentence a reader would repeat about you after a fast read.
- Where attention held and where it dropped, paragraph by paragraph.
- Six bands, each with the sentence that earned it and what would raise it.
- Notes anchored to your own sentences, with rewording options in your register.
- Every named program, faculty member or resource, listed so you can check each one.
- Two ways to restructure what you already have, sketched out.
The review improves your essay. It never writes one.
Prompts by program
Each page carries this cycle’s prompts word for word, the length the program states, and a link to the page they were read from.
Common questions
- How long should a statement of purpose be?
- Typically 500 to 1,000 words. Harvard GSAS caps it at 1,000, Berkeley states roughly 500 to 1,000, and Cornell asks for one to two pages. Where a program states its own limit, the program page here carries it word for word with a link to the page it was read from.
- Is a statement of purpose the same as a personal statement?
- No, and programs that ask for both mean two different essays. The statement of purpose is about the research: the question, what you have done, what your part in it was, and who you want to work with. A separate personal statement, where one is asked for, is read as its own essay on its own bands.
- Does it work for a master’s statement as well as a PhD one?
- Yes. A master’s statement is read for what you want the degree for, whether your preparation supports it, and whether this program fits that purpose. Pick the track on the box below and the read uses that set of bands.
- What does the free read include?
- The one sentence a reader remembered, your top fix in full, one note on your own writing, and where attention drops across the draft. The rest of the report unlocks with the paid one.
PhD programs and Master's programs are one of five tracks. The full list, and the prompts behind each, start at phd programs or on the graduate admissions page.
Questions that come up before any of that: how long a statement of purpose should be, a PhD statement of purpose read in full, printed as the engine wrote it, a masters statement read in full, printed as the engine wrote it and how many essays each program actually asks for.
If you are still deciding who should read it, every option priced side by side.
