Even the personal statement is optional here, but it is the only writing Georgia State University will see. Exception: the Honors College, and the Stamps and Presidential Scholarships.
Georgia State University asks for no writing of its own and marks the Common App personal statement optional. Optional does not mean ignored: if you send one, it is read, and it is the only writing in your file. If the statement is already written for other schools on your list, submitting it here costs nothing and gives the reader something no transcript shows.
Two routes ask for writing Georgia State does not ask of everyone. The Honors College is the first, and unusually it is answered inside the same Common App application rather than on a separate site: "Every prospective high school student who submits and completes their Common Application to Georgia State is automatically reviewed for Honors College eligibility." Georgia State publishes the prompts in full: "If you wish to be evaluated for admission by Georgia State's Honors College, please provide a 350-500 word response to one of the following prompts: How have the environments or experiences of your upbringing -- your home, neighborhood, or community -- shaped the person you are today? / Most of us have at least one issue or passion we care deeply about; if you had 10 minutes and the attention of a million people, what would your talk be about? / If these inanimate objects could speak, how would your room, car, or computer describe you? / Devise a question that is not currently on the Common App and provide a thoughtful response." The second is money: the Stamps and Presidential Scholarships need their own application, closing at 11:59 p.m. on November 15, 2026, and Georgia State says of it "Why do we ask you to submit a series of essays? In short, because we're interested in getting to know you as a student beyond a list of grades and activities." Those prompts live inside the scholarship portal and are not published, so none are printed here. November 15 is the date for both routes, months before the May 1 general deadline.
That cuts both ways. With no supplement, there is no second chance to show fit or interest in writing, so the one essay has to do all the character work on its own.
Early Action (November 15, 2026) is non-binding: an earlier answer with no commitment attached. Regular Decision closes May 1, 2027. Applying early means your essay is final about 24 weeks sooner; that is the revision time you trade for an earlier answer.

What SAT score do you need for Georgia State University?
A 1180 puts you in the top quarter of the students who enrolled, a 1060 at their midpoint, and a 940 at the bottom quarter, meaning one in four enrolled students scored below it. The same three points on the ACT are 19, 22 and 26. A quarter of an enrolled class scoring under the 25th percentile is not a rounding error, so a score below the range is a reason to strengthen the rest of the application rather than a reason not to apply.
US Department of Education, College Scorecard (2026-09-17). Percentiles describe students who enrolled, not everyone admitted. SAT totals are the reading and math bands added together, which is how every source in this market reports them and is an approximation of about 10 to 20 points, because the two sections are correlated.

- What GPA do you need for Georgia State University?
- The honest answer is that the federal data behind this page does not contain one. Colleges report their admit rate and their enrolled students' test scores to the Department of Education; they do not report a GPA distribution, so any site quoting an exact average GPA for Georgia State University is either reading that college's own Common Data Set or estimating. What the reported data does say is that Georgia State University admits 55.4% of applicants, and the more selective a college is, the closer to the top of the class its admitted students sit and the more the strength of your course load counts alongside the number itself.
