No essays at all: Cal State Apply takes no personal statement either. Exception: the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
Cal State Northridge (CSUN) reads no essays at all: Cal State Apply takes no personal statement here, and there are no supplemental questions. Admission rides on your transcript, course rigor, and the activities you list. Your writing effort belongs to the other schools on your list.
CSUN never states this policy outright. What it publishes is a "Prepare Application Materials" checklist for first-time freshmen, and the whole of it is unofficial transcripts, your Social Security number, citizenship status, the $70 application fee, your annual income, and the EOP section if that applies to you. No essay, personal statement or writing supplement appears in it, and its separate requirements page is entirely A-G courses and the eligibility index. The sentence that does answer the question belongs to the California State University rather than to CSUN: "Applicants do not need to submit any letters of recommendation, resumes or personal statements. A majority of the admissions decisions are based off of academic coursework they enter into the application." That system statement, plus a campus checklist with no writing in it, is what the answer above rests on.
One route is the exception across every CSU campus, and the system says so plainly: "Applicants do need to submit an essay and two letters of recommendation if they are applying to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)." EOP is an optional extra section inside the same Cal State Apply application, so nobody meets it by accident. CSUN's own EOP page words its side differently, listing "2 recommendations (on Cal State Apply). At least one must be from a school official who knows you both academically and personally", and adds something no other campus on this list does: "Please note that EOP at CSUN is one of the few campuses that conducts interviews for prospective students." Its dates are December 2 for the CSU application, January 15 for the EOP application and January 31 for the recommendation forms. If you are not applying to EOP there is nothing to write: GE Honors, the only other route, admits first-time freshmen on a 3.5 high school GPA with no essay.
There is one round here: everything is due May 15, 2027. No early-application strategy to weigh: every file is read on the same calendar.

- Does Cal State Northridge (CSUN) require the SAT or ACT?
- Not according to the federal admissions survey, where Cal State Northridge (CSUN) reports that SAT and ACT scores are neither required nor recommended. Read that as "not required" rather than "never looked at": the survey lags real policy by a cycle or more, and some colleges carrying this flag have since brought testing back while others genuinely ignore scores altogether. Check Cal State Northridge (CSUN)'s own admissions page before deciding whether to sit or send a test, and treat that page as the answer where the two disagree. Either way, grades and course load are doing most of the work here.
- What GPA do you need for Cal State Northridge (CSUN)?
- The honest answer is that the federal data behind this page does not contain one. Colleges report their admit rate and their enrolled students' test scores to the Department of Education; they do not report a GPA distribution, so any site quoting an exact average GPA for Cal State Northridge (CSUN) is either reading that college's own Common Data Set or estimating. What the reported data does say is that Cal State Northridge (CSUN) admits 93.5% of applicants, and the more selective a college is, the closer to the top of the class its admitted students sit and the more the strength of your course load counts alongside the number itself.
- How hard is it to get into Cal State Northridge (CSUN)?
