University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) supplemental essays

No. University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) asks for no supplemental essays in 2026-27. ApplyTexas. Even the personal statement is optional here, but it is the only writing University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) will see. Exception: the Honors College, and the Luminary Scholarship.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) asks for no writing of its own and marks the ApplyTexas personal statement optional. Optional does not mean ignored: if you send one, it is read, and it is the only writing in your file. If the statement is already written for other schools on your list, submitting it here costs nothing and gives the reader something no transcript shows.

Two routes ask for writing beyond the optional admissions essay. The UTRGV Honors College application asks incoming freshmen for two letters of recommendation, a transcript, a list of extracurricular activities and a "Written OR video essay", which is the rare prompt you may answer on camera; UTRGV publishes no topic and no length for it. Its deadlines are June 30 for the fall semester, April 30 for summer and December 31 for spring. The second is the Luminary Scholarship, applied for through the UTRGV Excellence Application by December 1: "Students meeting initial eligibility will be identified and asked to submit two letters of recommendation (one must be from a high school teacher, advisor, or principal), and an essay", and you must already be admitted by December 1. No prompt or word count is published for that one either. Neither is part of the ordinary application.

That cuts both ways. With no supplement, there is no second chance to show fit or interest in writing, so the one essay has to do all the character work on its own.

May 1, 2027 is a priority date, not a closing date: it is the date to work to, and the application stays open past it. This page carries that date only. There is no early round to weigh either way.

A 1090 puts you in the top quarter of the students who enrolled, a 990 at their midpoint, and a 880 at the bottom quarter, meaning one in four enrolled students scored below it. The same three points on the ACT are 15, 18 and 21. A quarter of an enrolled class scoring under the 25th percentile is not a rounding error, so a score below the range is a reason to strengthen the rest of the application rather than a reason not to apply.

US Department of Education, College Scorecard (2026-09-17). Percentiles describe students who enrolled, not everyone admitted. SAT totals are the reading and math bands added together, which is how every source in this market reports them and is an approximation of about 10 to 20 points, because the two sections are correlated.
