Statement of purpose · Typically 500 to 1,000 words (Harvard GSAS: not to exceed 1,000 words; Berkeley: approximately 500 to 1,000 words; Cornell: one to two pages) · required
Submit a focused statement of purpose that conveys your research interests and qualifications: your reasons and motivations for pursuing a graduate degree in your chosen degree program, the experiences that shaped your research ambitions, your career objectives, and your past work in the intended field and related fields. Name the specific research questions you want to pursue and the faculty whose work aligns with yours, and explain why this program is the right intellectual fit.
Other essay · Typically 500 words or less (Harvard GSAS: no longer than 500 words) · optional
Personal statement (where a program asks for one alongside the SOP): describe the personal experiences that led you to pursue graduate education and how they will contribute to the academic environment, such as interests or passions, leadership positions, community engagement, other opportunities, or challenges. It should complement rather than duplicate the statement of purpose.
No per-program prompts in the launch set. The prompt merges the Harvard GSAS, UC Berkeley Graduate Division, and Cornell Graduate School guidance pages, all fetched 2026-09-09. Field tunes the persona: STEM statements lead with research experience and named labs; humanities and social science statements lead with the research question and methods. Deadlines are the typical window, not a fetched date.
