   A candidate statement should discuss your academic and career objectives in a concise, sharply-focused, and well-crafted essay. Generally speaking, this should include what you plan to research, how you plan to research it, how your work fits within the department or program, and how you have prepared for further graduate study.

Chicago calls it a candidate statement, not a statement of purpose, and each department adds its own prompt on this same page: Anthropology caps the statement at 1,000 words and adds a separate 500-word Statement of Fit naming faculty, centers and workshops; Comparative Human Development adds a one-page research proposal and caps the whole at 1,500 words; Social Thought asks for a letter to the Committee of no more than 2,500 words; Sociology asks for approximately 500 to 1,000 words plus a separate research summary of up to 1,000 words. The page bans generative AI outright: "Use of generative AI in the production of a candidate statement is considered plagiarism and should not be used." The deadline is from the division's Deadlines and Decisions page, labelled Autumn 2027 enrollment, 11:59 p.m. U.S. Central Time.
