PhD programs
The statement of purpose is read by faculty deciding whether to take you into their lab or seminar. It is about research: the question you want to work on, what you have done so far and what your part was, and who at this program you want to work with. Most programs give it 500 to 1,500 words and set no prompt beyond that.

What readers look for
The statement of purpose is read on six bands. Each band in your report comes with the sentence that earned it and what would raise it.
- 1
Research Question and Direction
What the writer wants to work on, stated early and specifically enough that a professor in the field could say whether it is their area.
- 2
Research Experience, Concrete
What they did, what they found, what their role was, what went wrong, and what they would do differently. A list of labs with no content lowers it.
- 3
Fit: Faculty and Program
Named faculty and groups, used correctly, with a reason each is a fit for the question. Swap the program and the statement should break.
- 4
Intellectual Trajectory
How the writer got here as a researcher: which question led to which. Childhood origin stories and "loved science since I was small" lower it.
- 5
Structure and Economy
Carries a faculty reader to the research question fast and stays there; no burned opening, no biography that is not about the work.
- 6
Clarity for a Faculty Reader
A professor deciding whether to take this person into the lab can tell in one read what they know, what they can do, and what they want to find out.
Where a program asks for a separate personal statement alongside the statement of purpose, it is read as its own essay.

Common questions
- Can NudgeEssay review a phd programs statement of purpose?
- Yes. The read is written for an adult applicant, not a high school senior: it scores six bands, quotes your own sentences back to you, shows where a reader's attention drops, and ranks the fixes. The first fix and the line a reader kept are free to read.
- Which PhD programs are covered?
- 13 programs for 2026-27, each on its own page with the prompts word for word, the length the program states, and a link to the page they were read from.
- What does the free read include?
- The one sentence a reader remembered, your top fix in full, one note on your own writing, and where attention drops across the draft. The rest of the report, every note, both rewrites and all six bands argued, unlocks with the paid report.
