Every college’s early deadlines, side by side

No essays at all: NAU application takes no personal statement either. Exception: the University Honors College.

Northern Arizona University reads no essays at all: NAU application takes no personal statement here, and there are no supplemental questions. Admission rides on your transcript, course rigor, and the activities you list. Your writing effort belongs to the other schools on your list.

NAU itself does not answer this question anywhere. Every first-year page on nau.edu (how to apply, the application steps, the admissions landing page and the important dates page) was read on 2026-09-17 and none of them names an essay, a personal statement or a writing supplement in either direction. What NAU describes instead is admission by grades: "We offer guaranteed admission to all students who've completed their junior year and are on track to graduate with a core GPA of 2.5+ (4.0 scale)." The one place a positive answer exists is NAU's own profile on the Common App, which carries the line "No personal essay required - First Year". That profile, not NAU's website, is the source for the answer above.

One route is the exception, and it is the most writing on this page. The University Honors College asks admitted NAU students for an online application, a resume and two essays. Essay one gives four options, two photographs, a second photograph and an excerpt from chapter 12 of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, and asks "what does this image say to you? Or what is the excerpt conveying?"; the response "should be at least 500 and no more than 800 words in length". Essay two is not really an essay: "Please write five sentences describing yourself, your life, and your experiences that, taken together, form an accurate view of who you are", with the instruction that listing more than five means only the first five are read and that they must not repeat the resume. Both are graded on "thesis, supporting evidence, organization, grammar, spelling, parallel construction, style, and mechanics", and NAU treats AI-written essays as plagiarism. The application runs September 1 to August 15 with no hard cutoff, but anything in by 11:59pm on November 15, 2026 is considered for an Honors Merit Scholarship for Fall 2027, February 1 is the date for Honors housing and April 1 the priority date for the first-year Honors seminar. None of it is part of the ordinary NAU application, so if you are not applying to Honors there is still nothing to write.

Applications are reviewed as they arrive, so an early file competes while the most seats are still open, which is a reason to complete your file sooner than any printed date forces you to.

US Department of Education, College Scorecard (2026-09-17). Percentiles describe students who enrolled, not everyone admitted.

Does Northern Arizona University require the SAT or ACT?
Not according to the federal admissions survey, where Northern Arizona University reports that SAT and ACT scores are neither required nor recommended. Read that as "not required" rather than "never looked at": the survey lags real policy by a cycle or more, and some colleges carrying this flag have since brought testing back while others genuinely ignore scores altogether. Check Northern Arizona University's own admissions page before deciding whether to sit or send a test, and treat that page as the answer where the two disagree. Either way, grades and course load are doing most of the work here.
What GPA do you need for Northern Arizona University?
The honest answer is that the federal data behind this page does not contain one. Colleges report their admit rate and their enrolled students' test scores to the Department of Education; they do not report a GPA distribution, so any site quoting an exact average GPA for Northern Arizona University is either reading that college's own Common Data Set or estimating. What the reported data does say is that Northern Arizona University admits 89.6% of applicants, and the more selective a college is, the closer to the top of the class its admitted students sit and the more the strength of your course load counts alongside the number itself.
How hard is it to get into Northern Arizona University?
Northern Arizona University admits 89.6% of the people who apply, which is about 9 in 10 applicants. Numbers inside the reported range put you in a real position here, and the application itself decides the rest.
