College essay grader: six rubric bands, and the read a grade leaves out

A college essay grader scores a draft against a rubric and hands back numbers. NudgeEssay does that, six bands from 1 to 5 on a rubric built for the essay type, and then does the part a grade cannot: it reads the essay cold, twice, and reports the one sentence a tired reader keeps, where attention dropped, which sentences any applicant could have written, and what to change first. The six bands are free to see on your own essay before you pay; the full report is $49 for one essay or $299 for 20.

A grade tells you where you stand. It does not tell you why, or what to do on Tuesday. That is what the rest of the report is for.

What the six bands look like

The bands from a published sample report on a common app personal statement, read from the report itself. Each band carries a label naming it and a line from the essay that drove it.

  • 5/5

    Authentic Voice

  • 5/5

    Specificity & Scene

    Concrete throughout

  • 5/5

What a grade cannot see

The read a stranger gives it. Two readers, blind to each other, read the draft cold and report what survived: the one sentence still there the next morning, and where attention held or dropped paragraph by paragraph. A band says the essay is specific; the attention map says which paragraph a tired reader skipped anyway.

Which sentences anyone could have written. Every line that any applicant could have written is marked in the essay itself. A rubric cannot point; the marked manuscript does.

Whether it answered the prompt asked. Not the quality of the writing, but whether every separate thing the prompt asked for is actually in the essay. Strong essays fail this more often than weak ones.

What to change first. A grade with six numbers implies six equal jobs. The report ranks the fixes by payoff per word changed, names what is working so revision does not sand it off, and sketches two rebuilt openings from your own material. All 23 checks are listed on what the review checks.

How to use a grader without writing to the grade

The failure mode of every essay grader is the essay revised until every band is a 5: smooth, correct, and forgettable, the essay a thousand other applicants also wrote. Nearly every draft we see is competent, and competent is the problem. Use the bands to find the weak criterion, then take the fix list, not the number. If a revision raises a band and loses the one specific true thing only you could have said, the revision was wrong.

The one test that separates a useful grader from a useless one works on this site too: ask to see a complete finished report on a real essay, not a score. Seven are published on the samples page, unedited and free to read.

College essay grader, answered

Is there a free college essay grader?
Yes. Run NudgeEssay on your essay and the six rubric bands, the verdict and the standout line come back free, before any payment. The full marked-up report, with the notes on your exact sentences, the attention map and the ranked fix list, is $49 for one essay or $299 for a pack of 20, about $15 an essay.
What rubric does the college essay grader use?
A house rubric built for the essay type, six criteria banded 1 to 5. For a Common App personal statement the criteria are authentic voice, specificity and scene, reflection and insight, structure and word economy, memorability, and what you would bring. A Why Us or Why Major essay is banded on criteria built for that prompt instead. Every band comes with a two-to-four-word label naming the band you got, a short quote from your own essay that most drove it, and two or three sentences on what would raise it.
How accurate is an AI college essay grader?
No essay grader, human or AI, can tell you what a college will decide, and NudgeEssay publishes no accuracy percentage because none has been measured against admissions outcomes. What it does instead is show its work: every band is tied to a quoted line from your essay, two independent readers read the draft blind and their disagreement is flagged, and seven complete reports on sample essays are published unedited so you can judge the grader before trusting it with yours.
Does a high grade mean I will get in?
No. NudgeEssay has no relationship with any college and does not predict, influence or guarantee any admissions decision. A high band means the essay does that one thing well by the rubric. Admission depends on the whole application, the applicant pool that year, and what each college is looking for, none of which any essay grader can see.
What is the difference between a college essay grader and a college essay review?
A grader hands back numbers: where the draft stands on each criterion. A review hands back the read: what a stranger keeps after one pass, where attention dropped, which sentences any applicant could have written, and what to change first. NudgeEssay is both, and the grade is the smaller half. The six bands are free; the review is the paid report.
