How long should a statement of purpose be?

Around 1,000 words, or one to two pages, is what most graduate schools state when they state anything. The catch is that many state nothing at all, because in graduate admissions the department usually owns the requirement and the university defers to it. Where your program gives a number, that number wins.

What each graduate school states

Each line is the school’s own wording for the 2026-27 cycle, read from its own page. Last read September 11, 2026. Programs that publish no length are left out rather than given a number we made up.

A graduate school page is not the last word. Check the department’s own page before you settle on a length, because that is where the requirement usually lives.

Six names, one document

The same piece of writing is called a statement of purpose, an academic statement of purpose, a statement of academic purpose, a candidate statement, a statement of objectives and, at some schools, a personal statement. Match on what the page asks for, never on the name. And where a school asks for two documents, they are not two drafts of one: the purpose statement is about the work, and the personal history or life-experiences statement is about the path that brought you to it.

Where the words go wrong

Every read here reports how the words divide between setup, scene and reflection, and an overlong statement of purpose is almost always long in the biography. The reader is a faculty member deciding whether to take you into a group: they are looking for the question you want to work on, what you actually did and found, and why this department rather than another. A childhood origin paragraph spends the space that a named faculty member and a real result would have used.

A worked example, published in full: a PhD statement of purpose with the read on it.

Common questions

How long should a statement of purpose be?
Around 1,000 words, or one to two pages, is the most common instruction among the graduate schools that state one at all. Several cap it exactly there and a few allow more. Where the program you are applying to states a number, that number wins over any general figure, this page included.
What if my program states nothing?
Write to about 1,000 words. In graduate admissions the department usually owns the requirement and the university publishes nothing centrally, so silence on a graduate-school page is not permission to run long: it means the instruction lives on a departmental page that is worth finding before you draft.
Is the statement of purpose the same as a personal statement?
Often not, and several schools ask for both. The statement of purpose is about the work: the question you want to pursue, what you have done toward it, and which faculty and groups make this the right place. A personal history or life-experiences statement is about the path that brought you there. Sending one where the other belongs is the most expensive mistake in the file.
Does it go by other names?
Yes, and the wording changes per school. The same document appears in these records as statement of purpose, academic statement of purpose, statement of academic purpose, candidate statement, statement of objectives and personal statement. Read the program page rather than matching on the name.
Should I use the full length?
Use most of it, and spend it on the research rather than on the origin story. The read reports how the words divide, and an overlong statement of purpose is nearly always long in the biography rather than in the work. A faculty reader deciding whether to take you into a lab is looking for what you know, what you can do and what you want to find out.

What the six bands judge, and what comes back on a full read, is on the statement of purpose review page. The programs and their wording start at PhD and master’s. 17 programs carry their own page here.
