How many essays do graduate programs require?
The 53 programs and application services below ask for 174 essays between them for the 2026-27 cycle. 102 are required and 72 are optional, so 41% of the writing in front of an applicant is writing nobody is demanding. The heaviest single application on the list is Goizueta with 8 essays.
Every figure on this page is computed from the dataset when the page is built, over the 53 of 60 records read from the program’s own admissions page between September 9, 2026 and September 11, 2026. What is left out, and why, is in the method below.
Essays by track
The median is the middle program on each track, not an average, because one program asking for eight essays would drag an average away from every other row. Required and optional are counted the way the program itself labels them.
| Track | Programs | Median required | Median total | Essays | Optional |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medical school | 3 | 1 | 3 | 7 | 43% |
| MBA | 21 | 3 | 4 | 95 | 37% |
| Law school | 14 | 1 | 3 | 47 | 60% |
| PhD | 12 | 1 | 2 | 21 | 24% |
| Master's | 3 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 25% |
The 3 medical rows are application services rather than schools: one essay goes to every school through the service, and the secondary essays each school then sends back are not in this dataset because there are hundreds of them and they change every June.
Most of the gap is the optional essay
Law school applications are the extreme: 14 programs require 19 essays between them and offer 28 more, so 60% of the writing is optional. The median program on that track requires 1 and offers a total of 3.
The word is misleading for planning. An optional statement is a real piece of writing with the same deadline, and skipping one is a decision rather than a default. The number to plan around is the total column, not the required one.
How the length is stated
Across all 174essays counted. A program that names more than one unit is counted at the unit it uses for the writing, so “500 words or a 1 to 3 minute video” counts as words.
| The cap is stated as | Essays | Share |
|---|---|---|
| A number of words | 92 | 53% |
| A number of pages or lines | 35 | 20% |
| No length stated | 31 | 18% |
| A number of characters | 16 | 9% |
Only 92 of 174 name a number of words. That is why a length quoted without a program name beside it is close to useless here: a two-page cap, a 5,300-character cap and a 500-word cap are three different instructions, and 31 items state no length at all. What each program says, word for word, is on its own page. The per-track answers are at law, MBA, medical school and the statement of purpose.
9 of the 174 items are not writing at all: a timed video or a set of captioned images, and 7 of those offer no written alternative with a stated cap. They are at Darden, Haas, McDonough, MIT Sloan and 5 other programs.
All 53 programs, most essays first
Each name opens that program’s own prompts, word for word, with its stated caps and its deadlines. The date is the day the program’s page was last read.

Method
Source: each program’s own admissions page, read between September 9, 2026 and September 11, 2026. Outside admissions guides are not a source here, because they copy each other and go stale together.
Counted: 53 of the 60 records tracked for 2026-27, each with a dated read of the program’s own page. Left out: 3 records that describe what a track expects in general rather than what one program asks, which would otherwise count an expectation as an application; and 4 whose essay wording sits inside the application portal rather than on a public page, so the essay list there is not a fact read off a page. Those records still exist on this site and say so.
Counting: one essay is one item the program lists. Required and optional are taken from the program’s own labelling. A video or image submission counts as an item, because it is a piece of the application an applicant has to produce, and it is counted separately above. The unit is read off the program’s own limit wording, taking words ahead of any other unit named alongside them.
Not used: no applicant essays, no customer data, nothing submitted to NudgeEssay. A program can change its prompts mid-cycle, so confirm on the program’s own page before you write. The same question for undergraduate applications is answered at how many supplemental essays colleges require.

Common questions
- How many essays does a graduate program require?
- It depends on the track, and the spread is wide. Across the 53 programs read on their own pages for 2026-27, the median program asks for: Medical school, 1 required and 3 counting the optional ones; MBA, 3 required and 4 counting the optional ones; Law school, 1 required and 3 counting the optional ones; PhD, 1 required and 2 counting the optional ones; Master's, 1 required and 1 counting the optional ones. The heaviest single program on the list is Goizueta with 8 essays, 5 of them required.
- How many graduate application essays are optional?
- 72 of 174 (41%). The gap is widest on the law school track, where 60% of the 47 essays at 14 programs are offered rather than required. "Optional" is a scheduling problem more than a writing one: the work is real, the deadline is the same, and the count you plan around is the total, not the required number.
- Do graduate programs state a word limit?
- Often not. Of the 174 essays counted, 92 state a cap in words, 35 state it in pages or lines, 16 state it in characters, and 31 state no length at all. A page is not a word count and a character is not a word, so a length you read without a school name beside it was describing a different application.
- Are all graduate application essays actually written?
- No. 9 of the 174 items counted are a video or an image submission rather than prose, and 7 of those offer no written alternative with a stated cap. They are almost all MBA programs.
- Where do these numbers come from?
- From NudgeEssay's own dataset of 60 graduate program and application-service records for 2026-27, each read from the program's own admissions page. Only the 53 rows with a dated read of that page are counted, between September 9, 2026 and September 11, 2026. 3 rows describing what a track expects in general, and 4 whose essay wording sits inside an application portal rather than on a public page, are left out. No applicant essays and no customer data are used.
